The Canadian government is actively seeking impartial individuals to serve as members on its military college review board. This board, consisting of five civilians, will specifically include individuals with no affiliation to the public service or National Defence.
The board’s creation is in direct response to a report released in May 2022 by former Supreme Court Justice Louise Arbour, who conducted a thorough review of sexual misconduct within the Canadian Armed Forces.
The issue hits particularly close to home as there have been numerous allegations of sexual misconduct at the Royal Military College (or RMC) in Kingston over the years.
In fact, retired Lt. Col. Mark Popov, who previously held the position of head of cadet training at the institution, revealed in a 2021 interview with Global News that he had personally witnessed instances where evidence of sexual misconduct was disregarded due to concerns about tarnishing the institution’s reputation.
He says he regrets not having taken action.
