The Ontario coroner is going to investigate the death of a young student who took his own life while attending Royal Military College in Kingston. This is not very common, but the family’s lawyer is glad about it.
The student, Absar Chaudhry, was found dead in his dorm room on November 30. He was only 21 years old. He was doing well in college at first, but he stopped going to classes for over two weeks before he died. He had also asked for time off from his studies, which surprised his parents.
The family’s lawyer, Michel Drapeau, who used to be in the military, asked the coroner to look into the case. He said the family had questions that the military hadn’t answered about what happened before their son’s death.
The Defense Department and the Canadian Armed Forces are open to having more investigations to find out what caused the student’s death. They will cooperate with the coroner’s investigation.
The military is also doing its own investigation and will talk to people who knew the student. The family will also be part of this process.
The family will have to wait a long time for the investigation to finish and for a report to be made. It might take years. But this is the first time that the military college is being looked at closely by the public, which is a bit comforting for the family.
