A new PDF file scam can be a threat to your online security. Scammers are now targeting victims with a simple email with an attachment that will appear to be a hotel invoice.
The attachment is not a PDF, but rather a form of malware.
If you click the PDF it will ask you to download an update to open it.
If downloaded your computer will be scanned and you sensitive information will then be collected and sent to the cybercriminal.
Local police ask everyone to be aware of the warning signs. Tips to help can be found below.
Follow these tips to stay safe from similar scams:
• Cybercriminals are counting on you to click without thinking. Never open attachments
received from an unexpected email.
• If you booked a hotel for the holidays and received an email about it, check for details
that confirm the email’s legitimacy, such as the reservation number, check-in time, and
room details.
• Remember that this type of attack isn’t exclusive to travel invoices. Cybercriminals could
use this fake PDF file technique in a number of different scenarios.
Stop, look, and think. Don’t be fooled by the scammers.
