The Town of Gananoque is in mourning.
myFM has learned that Mr. Charlie Donevan has passed away, just shy of his 100th birthday.
Charlie was a staple in our community since his time as the original owner of what is now Donevan’s Hardware on the main street in the town. He never turned down a call for help and is a big part of making Gananoque what it is today.
He was also a lover of the outdoors and worked hard over the course of his life to protect it’s natural beauty, and the town’s natural historic heritage.
Donevan was highly engaged in initiatives aimed at conserving the former Machar property, now recognized as Agnes Maule Machar Park, as well as Rotary Beach and Bay Road in Gananoque. His dedication to land preservation and enhancing the local community was boundless. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in establishing the VAGA gallery in the town, providing support for local artists.
These are but a few of the ways Charlie made Gananoque a better place to live.
Mr. Donevan’s passing comes as plans were in the works to mark his 100th birthday with a celebration in the town on July 1st, Canada Day. The plan was to close the streets, host a parade in his honour and a whole lot more.
Gananoque says the flags at Town Hall have been lowered to half-mast in memory of Donevan.
Charlie served as an ambassador for his beloved Gananoque for over 90 years.
In a brief statement, the town said they extend deepest condolences to his family and friends.
Charlie, you will be missed.
