The United Counties of Leeds and Grenville will receive up to $148,874 in funding through the Rural Economic Development (RED) program, Ontario’s Minister of Rural Affairs, Lisa Thompson, and Steve Clark, MPP for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes, announced today. The funding will support the region’s 1000 Islands Rideau Canal Waterways Regional Tourism Destination Strategy, aimed at promoting economic recovery and growth in the local tourism and hospitality sectors.
The RED program funds projects that enhance local economies, tackle labor challenges, and build community capacity. Leeds and Grenville plan to use this funding to advance tourism by promoting local businesses and encouraging visitors to explore the area.
“I’m pleased our government is supporting rural businesses that are vital to the vibrancy of our communities,” said MPP Steve Clark.
Warden Nancy Peckford of Leeds and Grenville expressed gratitude for the provincial support, noting that the funds are critical to boosting tourism and supporting local businesses. Ann Weir, Economic Development Manager, said the investment will help create new tourism products, such as the Foodie Shop Adventure, which has already attracted new customers to local businesses like Ridgway Confections in Seeley’s Bay.
The RED program is part of Ontario’s effort to remove barriers to rural economic growth and create jobs across the province.
