A new emergency homeless shelter is coming to Sydenham Road in Kingston, with room for couples, pets, and up to 45 people.
City council approved the purchase of 924 Sydenham Rd. night for $2.45 million, plus up to $65,000 in closing costs. The money will come from the 2025 city budget for housing and homelessness services.
The site will feature modular, accessible units with 30 beds and space for 15 more if needed. The shelter will include showers, overnight storage for personal items, limited meal services, and a meeting space.
The new shelter is planned to replace beds that will be lost as the Adelaide Street shelter begins to close.
The existing house on the Sydenham Road property will stay and be used for support services.
The new shelter is expected to be open by the end of this year.
The project is part of the city’s plan to improve homeless services.
