Gananoque Police are warning the public about the rising threat of romance scams, which have increased as more people turn to online dating, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. These scams not only cause financial losses but also lead to serious emotional harm, including feelings of shame and embarrassment.
Scammers often build long-term, seemingly genuine relationships on dating apps or social media before manipulating victims for money. Common tactics include fabricated emergencies like car accidents or requests for plane tickets. In some cases, scammers use intimate images for blackmail.
Police urge residents to never send money or share personal images with someone they haven’t met in person. Trusting instincts and staying informed are key to avoiding these scams.
Anyone who believes they’ve been targeted is encouraged to contact the Gananoque Police Service at 613-382-4422. The community is reminded to stay cautious and protect themselves while seeking connections online.
