Gananoque Police are warning residents about the rapid growth of cybercrime, a global threat targeting individuals during everyday activities like banking, shopping, or browsing online. One prevalent scam is the Microsoft Tech Support Scam, where fraudsters either call claiming to be from Microsoft or use fake pop-up messages to trick victims into calling a support number.
These scammers aim to gain remote access to your device, allowing them to install malware or ransomware, steal personal and financial information, and even lock or destroy files.
To protect yourself, use strong, unique passwords, keep firewalls and antivirus software updated, secure your mobile devices, and safeguard your Wi-Fi network. Avoid sharing financial details online and keep social media profiles private.
If you encounter suspicious tech support calls or pop-ups, report them immediately to Microsoft at www.microsoft.com/reportscam and notify local authorities. Staying informed and cautious is key to staying safe in today’s digital world.
