Canadians are being warned to watch out for deepfake videos used in online scams.
The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says fraudsters are using fake videos of public figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, to promote cryptocurrency investment schemes and subscription traps. These videos may look real but are computer-generated and designed to trick people.
Scammers often promise big returns on fake crypto platforms or ask viewers to click on links that lead to costly subscriptions.
Experts say these deepfakes are becoming more realistic and harder to spot.
The public is urged to stay alert, research all investment offers carefully, and avoid clicking on suspicious links. If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Anyone who believes they’ve been targeted or scammed should report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
