New hospital site is first step in expansion of services: CEO

The CEO of Kingston Health Sciences Centre believes a new hospital was needed to meet the growing needs of the city.

We told you last week that the City of Kingston are setting aside 95 acres in the Clogg’s Rd. Business Park to build a new hospital complex.

Dr. David Pichora says selecting a site for hospital expansion was the first step in what will be a very long process.

Pichora says they have outgrown both Kingston General and Hotel Dieu sites and needed to find a spot where they are able to expand.

The hospital first approached the city for ideas of a suitable location for a new hospital.

Mayor Bryan Paterson says they suggested hospital officials take look at a parcel of land near Hwy. 401 and Gardiners Rd.

Paterson says it made sense to build a new hospital where they expect more development in the future.

But he also admits that moving hospital services away from the downtown will be an inconvenience to some.

There is also the cost of building the new hospital which Paterson says they are still trying to lobby the province into funding it.

Pichora says KHSC will continue to work with the Ministry of Health on a master site plan.
