Police in Gananoque and surrounding areas are warning residents about a significant rise in the so-called “grandparent scam”, a fraudulent phone scheme that targets seniors by preying on their emotions.
Scammers pose as a grandchild or other close family member, often claiming to be in legal trouble or hospitalized. In some cases, a second caller pretends to be a police officer or lawyer, increasing the sense of urgency. Victims are asked to send money immediately for bail or medical expenses—via wire transfers, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or even couriers who arrive at their homes. Police stress: none of these methods are used for legitimate bail or medical payments, and officers never send couriers to collect money.
To protect yourself:
Verify the story by calling your grandchild or another family member.
Never use phone numbers provided by the caller—look up official contact details yourself.
Set a family “safe word” to confirm identity.
Don’t be pressured—scammers rely on fear and urgency.
If you’ve been scammed or lost money, report it to your local police. If no money was lost, contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501. Your best defense is awareness.
