It was a hot night of racing for round two of the Ogilvie’s Triple Crown Series for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds and DIRTcar Sportsman this past Saturday night at the Brockville Ontario Speedway. Exciting finishes and new winners highlighted an exciting evening of racing.
Vincent Charbonneau has been strong in the Street Stock ranks to begin 2025 and was fast early in the 15 lap feature on Saturday night, leading the way over Kyle Massey and Mike Schonauer. The top three were looking to run away and hide from everyone as they battled hard for the lead. A quick yellow just past the halfway point bunched up the field for a restart, which did not change the running order, with Charbonneau getting another good launch out front. As the laps clicked off the racing got a bit more intense as Charbonneau was holding off a very determined Mike Schonauer in the closing laps. The final yellow flew on lap 13 setting up a great three car battle for the win. When the green flew it was Marchand in front with Schonauer right there to challenge and Nick Gauvreau running third. On the final lap and final turn Charbonneau, Schonauer and Gauvreau were three wide coming to the finish. At the checkered flag Vincent Charbonneau was able to edge out Schonauer and Gauvreau by inches for his first Brockville win. Mike Schonauer, Nick Gauvreau, Stephane Philippe and Charles Marchand completed the top 5.
Kalen Draper paced the field early at the start of the 50 lap Ogilvie’s Triple Crown Series race for the DIRTcar 358 Modifieds with Corey Wheeler and Tristan Draper chasing him. Kalen was running a perfect line on the bottom but Wheeler was right there with him on a very fast track. The top three were driving away from a quality field on this night and looked to be the ones to settle the win amongst themselves. The first yellow flew on lap 25 as Chris Ferguson slowed on the front stretch. On the next restart it was Corey Wheeler taking over the top spot with Kalen and Tristan Draper now battling for second and third. Wheeler started to pull away from the field and was in search of his third career Ogilvie’s Series win but Tristan Draper was running hard and closing on he leader with Cornwall native Gabriel Cyr moving to the number three spot. On lap 39 Gavin MacFarlane slowed on the back stretch setting up one last shot for Tristan Draper and Gabriel Cyr. When the green flew Wheeler was able to get in front and hold the lead but Tristan Draper was looking to the high lane as the laps clicked off. On the final lap Corey Wheeler was able to pull away and never look back as he secured his third series win and 4th trip to Brockville Speedway victory lane. Tristan Draper, Gabriel Cyr, Johnathon Ferguson and Jarrett Herbison the top 5.
Guy Gosselin was looking to end the dominance of Josh Verne Jr. in the Surprenant Truck Shop Crate Sprints as he jumped into the lead over Lee Ladouceur and Rick Wilson. Josh Verne Jr. slipped back to 4th on the initial start but was looking to rebound, however the yellow flew on lap 3 for Marc Surprenant as he slowed off the back stretch. When the green came out Gosselin remained in control but Josh Verne Jr. was on the charge taking the runner up spot from Ladouceur, then went to work trying to catch the race leader. As the laps clicked off the gap between the top two remained at around 5 car lengths and it appeared that Gosselin was on his way to his first ever win. Slower traffic came into play as Gosselin was having troubles getting through, which allowed Verne to close in. On the white flag lap, the top two raced side by side to turn three with Verne getting the advantage. Gosselin nearly spun in turn four allowing Josh Verne Jr. to get by and roll on to his 5th straight win and become the winningest driver in the class with his 8th career Brockville triumph. Gosselin nearly spun coming to the line allowing Lee Ladouceur to grab second while Gosselin crossed in third, ahead of Rick Wilson and Ryan Poole.
Dylan Kirkland jumped to the lead at the start of the 40 lap Ogilvie’s Triple Crown Series race for the DIRTcar Sportsman over Bobby Herrington, Jessica Power, Matt Barbour and Xavier Andrews. Kirkland and Herrington showed they would be the two drivers to contend with as they drove away from the rest of the field in the early laps. Herrington stayed patient and ran down Kirkland eventually grabbing the lead on lap 12 and began to author one of the most dominant performances fans had not seen in a long time. Herrington worked the lapped traffic with zero issues on this night and was lapping cars without any problems, leaving many to wonder if anyone would be left on the lead lap. Behind the leader and second place Dylan Kirkland, a great battle for third was going on between Power, points leader Gavin Eisele and Matt Barbour, but Herrington was well in front and by lap 30 had lapped up to the 8th place running Fire Swamp. It appeared that Herrington would march to an easy win, but the yellow flew on lap 31 for Matt Mould, who spun off turn 4. On the restart Herrington once again drove away from the field, putting nearly a half straight away on Dylan Kirkland over the next 4 laps with Jessica Power running a solid third. In the end, Bobby Herrington was too strong as he grabbed his third win of the year, 37th of his Brockville Sportsman career and took over the top spot on the Ogilvie’s Sportsman Triple Crown win list, with his 8th series win. Dylan Kirkland, Jessica Power, Gavin Eisele and Matt Barbour completed the top 5.
Ogilvie’s Triple crown Series night was completed with a 12 lap Novice Sportsman feature and Cory Lambert led the way early, but it was short lived as opening day winner Tessa Riemersma grabbed the lead on lap two. Kyle Kudrinko was on the move and one lap later, would grab the lead himself and begin to run away from the field. A late race yellow bunched up the field, giving Riemersma one last chance at Kudrinko for the lead. When the green flew Kudrinko jumped out front and would drive on for his second win in three weeks. Cory Lambert charged to second with Damien King getting by Tessa Riemersma for third, while Shawn Reid crossed in 5th.
