St. Luke’s Leeds Anglican Church has expanded its “Helping Hands Rural Transportation Assistance” program as of March 31st with funding from the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. The funding, which runs until March 30, 2026, enables the church to assist more seniors in Elgin, Seeley’s Bay, Lyndhurst, and surrounding areas who lack transportation to reach medical and social service appointments outside their communities.
For years, St. Luke’s volunteer drivers have helped residents travel to destinations such as Smiths Falls and Kingston for essential appointments. With the new funding, the program can operate on a larger scale, supporting more seniors with trips for basic and complex medical care, dental visits, and other necessary services.
Known as the “church without a building,” St. Luke’s is active in the community through its thrift shop and various mission projects. All program proceeds and volunteer efforts aim to reduce isolation, promote independence, and strengthen local connections for seniors.
