A multi-day heat event affecting Gananoque and the Thousand Islands is expected to come to an end today, with daytime highs reaching 30 to 33°C and humidex values of 37 to 40°C, and overnight lows between 20 and 23°C. Cooler, less humid air is expected to move in from the northwest, bringing relief to the region.
Public health officials are reminding residents that extreme heat can affect everyone, particularly older adults, those living alone, and other at-risk individuals. Signs of heat exhaustion include headache, nausea, dizziness, intense fatigue, and dark urine. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires immediate attention by calling 9-1-1.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and seek cooler environments such as air-conditioned spaces or shaded public areas. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, and monitor vulnerable individuals closely. Following these precautions can help reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses as temperatures begin to drop.
