The Leeds Grenville Accessibility Advisory Committee hosted its first workshop, “Building Accessibility – It’s Easier Than You Think!” on Friday, October 3. The event aimed to share practical information on making homes and businesses accessible for people with disabilities. It featured speakers from across Leeds and Grenville, including representatives from the building sector and individuals with lived experience of accessibility challenges.
Presentations covered a variety of topics, including updating a historic stone house for accessibility, applying Universal Design principles, creating inclusive spaces, developing secondary dwellings to support accessibility, and accessible units within the United Counties’ Community Housing stock. Representatives from multiple municipalities and accessibility committees shared updates on their work, fostering collaboration and community engagement.
The event also included an exhibitor area showcasing accessibility-related products and services from organizations such as Amsted Design-Build, Developmental Services of Leeds and Grenville, TFH Canada Special Needs Toys, Brockville Home Health Care, and the United Counties Affordable Housing Department. The workshop was well attended, providing valuable resources and connections for participants interested in improving accessibility in the community.
