As Halloween approaches, Gananoque pet owners are being reminded to keep their furry friends safe, whether heading out for trick-or-treating or staying home.
The Ontario SPCA and Humane Society and local police say the excitement and noise of Halloween can easily frighten pets.
For those taking animals along, it’s important to keep them on a short leash, avoid tight costumes, and use reflective collars or lights to help them stay visible. Pet owners should also bring water, avoid noisy or crowded areas, and make sure pets don’t eat dropped candy or wrappers, which can be toxic.
If pets are staying home, experts suggest keeping them in a quiet room away from the door and using background noise like TV or music to calm them. Candy, candles, and cords should all be kept out of reach. Officials say a little planning can make Halloween safe and stress-free for everyone — including pets.
