The province is moving ahead with the next major step toward building the new Brockville Correctional Centre and expanding the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre. The project, announced by MPP Steve Clark, will begin with the demolition of ten buildings currently located on the site, which includes the Brockville Mental Health Centre, the Forensic Treatment Unit, and the former Brockville Psychiatric Hospital.
The redevelopment will replace the 183-year-old Brockville Jail with a modern, 250-bed facility designed to enhance safety and efficiency for correctional staff and inmates. The expansion will also include 25 additional beds at the St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre to better accommodate female offenders requiring specialized care.
Design work for the new complex is already underway and expected to be completed by the summer of 2026. The province plans to issue a request for proposals in the fall of 2026, with construction slated to begin in June 2027. The site plan approval process with the Township of Elizabethtown-Kitley will also begin later this year.
