Gananoque Councillor David Osmond is voicing concern over what he calls a growing reluctance among capable residents to run for municipal office. In a post to Councilor Osmond’s Facebook page, he says several community-minded individuals have told him they would “never” consider standing for council due to the negativity, personal attacks, and polarized discussions that dominate social media.
He notes that this sentiment reflects a national trend, with many municipalities reporting difficulty attracting candidates and several mayors in Eastern Ontario acclaimed in the last election.
Osmond says the increasingly hostile environment, combined with changes to media coverage and the introduction of strong mayor powers, has made municipal governance less appealing and, at times, less rewarding for those who serve. He worries that this atmosphere could discourage strong future leaders and limit the diversity of voices at the council table.
While not a campaign statement, Osmond hopes raising the issue will spark community reflection before next fall’s election.
