The Thousand Islands Watershed Land Trust has secured the 360-acre Red Horse Highlands for $1.5 million, permanently protecting one of the most ecologically important landscapes in the Frontenac Arch Biosphere.
The deal was completed after TIWLT met a tight November deadline with help from provincial and federal programs, conservation funders and local donors, who contributed nearly 30 per cent of the total cost.
Executive director Calder Schweitzer called the project “exhilarating,” noting that community support made the historic purchase possible.
Ontario MPP Steve Clark said the province’s $331,875 grant helped leverage private donations to protect “majestic natural areas.”
The property borders Charleston Lake Provincial Park and includes 2,000 feet of shoreline on Red Horse Lake.
According to TIWLT, the land provides habitat for species such as Gray Ratsnake, Black Ash and Wood Thrush.
Federal officials said the acquisition strengthens ecosystems and preserves critical wetlands and forests for future generations.
