The Leeds & 1000 Islands Fire Service, alongside the Ontario Office of the Fire Marshal, is reminding residents that unattended cooking remains one of the leading causes of home fires. Even a few moments away from the stove can allow a pot or pan to ignite, creating a dangerous situation.
Officials advise staying in the kitchen while food is cooking, turning off burners if stepping away, and keeping flammable items, children, and pets at a safe distance. Simple precautions, they say, can prevent serious fires and protect families.
If a fire does occur, residents are urged to evacuate immediately and call 9-1-1. Fire officials stress that vigilance in the kitchen is one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep homes safe.
