Trustees with the Upper Canada District School Board met on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, to review progress on Indigenous education initiatives. Superintendent Amanda Nieman, Principal of Indigenous Education Kelty Grant, and Manager of Indigenous Education Ryan Jacobs highlighted the impact of the Board Action Plan for Indigenous Education (BAPIE).
The team reported that embedding Indigenous perspectives into everyday classroom activities and providing culturally responsive programming is producing measurable results. Over the past three years, the graduation rate for self-identified Indigenous students has risen nearly seven per cent. Equally impressive gains have been observed in EQAO assessments, with scores increasing across multiple subject areas.
Board officials noted that these improvements reflect both the dedication of educators and the value of creating learning environments that recognize and celebrate Indigenous culture. The initiative demonstrates how targeted programs can enhance student engagement, achievement, and overall success within the school district.
