As boating season approaches, the Canada Border Services Agency is reminding private boaters of their legal obligations when entering Canadian waters.
Officials say all travellers arriving by boat must report to the CBSA without delay, with requirements varying based on travel plans, nationality, and passengers onboard. Boaters who land on Canadian soil, anchor, or exchange people or goods must report, even for brief stops.
The agency is also urging boaters to be prepared with proper identification, declare all goods, and understand restrictions on items such as firearms, certain food products, and cannabis. Failure to report can result in fines starting at $1,000, as well as possible vessel seizure.
Boaters can report by phone through designated reporting centres or in person at marine reporting sites. NEXUS members have additional reporting options.
The CBSA says following guidelines will help ensure a safe, efficient, and enjoyable boating season while maintaining border security.
