Police services across Ontario join the OPP in mourning the loss of an officer killed in the line of duty along Highway 401 in Cobourg.
OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique confirmed Sergeant Brandon Malcolm died while on duty Monday, calling his death a tremendous loss for the force and the province. Carrique said Malcolm’s service and bravery will be honoured as colleagues grieve alongside his loved ones.
Few details have been released about the circumstances surrounding the incident, which remains under investigation. Earlier in the day, the OPP had confirmed an officer had died in the line of duty but withheld the officer’s identity until family notifications were completed.
Police have not said how the incident unfolded along the busy highway corridor.
Tributes are expected from police services and officials across Ontario as news of Malcolm’s death spreads.
The loss marks a devastating moment for the OPP, with the commissioner asking the public to keep the officer’s family, friends and fellow officers in their thoughts as the service navigates what he described as a profound loss.
