Police in eastern Ontario are warning residents that cold water remains a serious danger even as warmer weather arrives.
The Ontario Provincial Police East Region says cold water shock can happen quickly, even on mild spring days. The sudden drop in temperature can make it hard to breathe, swim or rescue yourself after an unexpected fall into open water.
Officers are urging anyone boating, paddling or spending time near lakes and rivers to wear a properly fitted life jacket or personal flotation device. They say wearing it before something goes wrong gives people the best chance of survival.
The warning comes as more residents head outdoors to enjoy spring conditions. Police stress that preparation is critical, as emergencies can happen without warning.
Officials continue to remind the public that safety precautions near water can make the difference between life and death during the early season.
