Residents in Gananoque planning to install or use an outdoor fireplace are being reminded of new safety regulations aimed at reducing fire risks in the community. The Town of Gananoque says all outdoor fireplace installations must be inspected and approved by the Gananoque Fire Service before being put into use, with a one-time permit fee of $65.
The regulations outline several installation requirements, including maintaining a minimum clearance of five feet from buildings, property lines, and roadways. Fireplaces must be located on non-combustible surfaces and cannot be placed beneath trees or overhead wires. Openings must be covered with metal mesh, and appliances must be fully extinguished by 11 p.m.
Fire protection rules also require suitable fire extinguishment equipment to be kept readily accessible, while fireplaces must be supervised at all times until extinguished. Only clean, dry, seasoned wood is permitted as fuel, with treated materials and waste products prohibited.
Town officials note that failure to comply may result in enforcement action under the Ontario Fire Code.
