Correctional Service Canada says an inmate housed in the Assessment Unit at Joyceville Institution has died while in custody.
Officials say the inmate died on May 11 of apparent natural causes. The individual’s identity has not been released due to a court-ordered publication ban protecting the identity of victims connected to the case.
At the time of death, the inmate was 60 years old and had been serving a 12-year sentence since November 2025.
CSC confirmed that the inmate’s next of kin have been notified.
As required in all inmate deaths, Correctional Service Canada says a review of the circumstances surrounding the death will take place. Policy also requires both police and the coroner to be notified whenever a death occurs in custody.
