A new reminder is being issued to e-scooter users about safety rules and legal requirements while riding on Ontario roads.
According to the information, e-scooters must meet specific standards, including having two wheels, working brakes, a standing platform, handlebar steering, a bell or horn, and proper lighting and reflective features.
Devices cannot include seats, baskets, or exceed a maximum speed of 24 kilometres per hour. Riders must be at least 16 years old and are required to stand while operating the device.
Helmets are mandatory for anyone under 18. Passengers and cargo are not permitted, and e-scooters cannot be used on controlled-access highways.
Officials also stress that local bylaws may restrict where e-scooters can be used, meaning riders should check municipal rules before heading out.
Violations of the Highway Traffic Act can lead to fines, and impaired operation remains illegal.
