The Township of Leeds and Thousand Islands is paying tribute to Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali by lowering flags at all municipal facilities until sunset on June 15.
Constable Bali died on June 9 after being struck by a vehicle during an attempted apprehension connected to an ongoing investigation in northern Ontario. According to the OPP, members of the James Bay detachment were attempting to stop a vehicle at approximately 12:30 p.m. when the officer was hit. He suffered serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased.
The Township announced flags would be flown at half-mast in recognition of the officer’s service and sacrifice.
Police have charged 18-year-old Justin Veronneau of Hearst in connection with the incident. Among the charges laid is first-degree murder.
