Canada recently chose to deepen ties with Saudi Arabia after signing 13 new commercial agreements spanning energy, mining, education and more.
Local MP Michael Barrett weighed in, saying the deals need to deliver real results.
Prime Minister Mark Carney’s move to strengthen the relationship has faced backlash because of Saudi Arabia’s human rights record. Critics have questioned whether Canada should expand trade with a country that has long faced international scrutiny over human rights issues.
Barrett said the rights Canadians expect at home should also be expected of Canada’s trade partners.
Barrett said the agreements must ensure goods and services imported into Canada are produced without forced labour.
As the federal government works to diversify trade beyond the United States, it says the deals with Saudi Arabia will create new economic opportunities and strengthen Canada’s international trade relationships.
