The Province is putting in funding in an effort to help businesses in Kingston affected by Canada’s ongoing trade war with the United States.
$302,000 is going to the Kingston Economic Development Coporation from the Province’s $40 million Tariff-Impacted Communities Program.
Tyler Allsopp, Parliamentary Assistant to Vic Fedeli, the Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade and MPP for the Bay of Qunite along with Kingston and the Islands MPP Ted Hsu were on hand for Thursday’s announcement.
Allsopp says these funds aim to help local businesses that are impacted by the ongoing trade war with the US.
The funds are going into KEDCO’s trade-resilience project which the organization is investing $492,000 over the next two years. It aims to help businesses across Eastern Ontario better respond to tariffs and other global trade disruptions by strengthening supply chains, open new markets, and increase exports.
Director of Business Development Shelly Hirstwood says the funds will be distributed through a number of initiatives.
Tariff-Impacted Communities Program is designed to help businesses become less dependent on the US market.
Allsopp says it will protect good-paying jobs while building resilient, self-reliant communities.
Businesses, not only in Kingston or across Eastern Ontario, but all over Canada have faced a number of hurdles since Donald Trump was elected as US President in 2024.
Hirstwood hopes their project will make businesses in Kingston better equipped to handle the turbulent environment.
