The Gananoque Fire Service is reminding residents about the importance of having working carbon monoxide alarms after crews responded to an activated CO alarm at a local home yesterday.
Firefighters detected carbon monoxide inside the residence, highlighting the potentially deadly danger of the colourless and odourless gas.
The Fire Service says a working CO alarm can provide the warning residents need to leave safely before exposure becomes dangerous.
In Ontario, homes with a fuel-burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage are required to have carbon monoxide alarms adjacent to sleeping areas and on every storey without a sleeping area.
Residents are encouraged to test their CO alarms regularly and never ignore an alarm.
If a CO alarm sounds, everyone should leave the home immediately, get to fresh air and call 911.
The Gananoque Fire Service says taking a few minutes to check your alarms could ultimately save a life.
