Ladies night is always a fun night at the Can Am Speedway and this past Friday night was another one of those nights. The day started off with a major rain storm that swept through the Town of Orleans, leaving many to wonder if we would even be racing. The skies cleared, the sun came out and it turned out to be a great evening of racing with Bob Johnson Auto Group on hand for the night.
Mike Durham has been the driver to beat in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman and on this night, it was no different. The Gouverneur New York driver would grab the lead early in the 15 lap event, with Cayden Graham and Rhylan Poole close behind. Once in front, Durham would set a fast pace and without a caution, it would be tough for the rest of the field to run him down. A yellow did fly on lap 8, which bunched the field up giving Cayden Graham another shot. On the restart Durham was able to hold the lead but Cayden Grahm was right there with him. Try as he may, Cayden Graham did everything to try and get by, but Mike Durham was too strong, scoring win number 6 on the year and 22nd career Can Am win across many divisions. Graham crossed in 2nd with Canadian Rhylan Poole in third, Jason Rarick 4th and Hayden Howard 5th.
It had been since June when Andrew Hennessy last went to victory lane at Can Am in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division. Hennessy would take the lead on lap 3 of the 20 lap event from Will Fisher, however Josh VanBrocklin was on the move from his 8th starting spot and would close in on Hennessy for the lead. Behind them, points leader Josh Verne Jr. was on the charge from 10th, as he made his way into the top three, but had a long way to go to catch the leader. The field would enter into lapped traffic just past the halfway point, but this did not phase Hennessy one bit, as he cut through the field, leaving VanBrocklin and Verne to deal with the traffic. In the end Andrew Hennessy put all the tough nights behind him, scoring is third win of the season and 10th of his Can Am career. Josh VanBrocklin crossed the line in 2nd with Josh Verne Jr. completing the top three. Adam Turner and Ken Klinkowsky rounded out the top 5.
Preston Forbes was the early pace setter in the 25 lap Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature with a determined Matt Caprara right there with him. The top two had a spirited battle for the lead in the opening laps, with Tyler Meeks watching the battle unfold from the number three spot. Behind the leaders, 7 time track champion Billy Dunn was on the move from near the back of the field, as he worked his way into the top 5 by lap 10, but had a long way to go to catch the leaders. At halfway the lead battle was on as Matt Caprara moved in on Preston Forbes, who was looking for his first win in almost two years at Can Am. Lance Willix was running strong as he got to the third from his 8th starting spot. On lap 18 Remington Hamm, running a borrowed ride for the night, saw his night go up in a puff of smoke on the front stretch. On the final restart Matt Caprara had to deal with a pair of veterans, as Billy Dunn and Lance Willix put the pressure on, but Caprara was too strong on this night, scoring his third win of the year and 4th of his Can Am Modified career. Dunn would come home 2nd, good enough to take a 2 point lead in the title fight with Tim Fuller, heading into the off week. Lance Willix, Preston Forbes and Josh Reome completed the top 5.
It was a very wild 20 Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature with Paul DeRuyter taking the lead away from early leader Caleb Howard as he pull away in the early laps with Greg Henry running in third. DeRuyter had a quick car and was looking for his first career win, but things behind him were about to become interesting. As the race reached the halfway point, some of the top drivers in the points had problems. Jessica Power had issues with the right front shock and eventually the left rear suspension and was in and out of the pits all night long. A lap 10 restart saw the first of two scary incidents, as Camdin Cook spun as the field tried to avoid him on the back stretch. Brodie Davis made contact sending both cars to the pits for the night. On the next restart, cars were jockeying for position, contact was made between several cars, resulting in Frank Sibley taking a wild flip down the front stretch, ending up in the infield. The red flag flew and Sibley was able to climb out of his car without injury. The car was done for the night. Third in points Eric Nier also suffered damage on the restart and went pit side for the night. When the green flew DeRuyter continued his great run while Keegan Nier and Tyler Stevenson put on a great battle for the runner up spot with Mason Rogers and points leader Gavin Eisele not too far back in the 4th and 5th spots. A quick yellow flew on lap 18 bunching up the field for a key restart. When the green flew Stevenson was able to get the run he wanted as he took the lead and would go unchallenged over the final laps to secure win number three on the year. DeRuyter finished runner up, with Keegan Nier, Gavin Eisele and Mason Rogers 5th.
The final event of the evening was the Sundance Leisure Thundercars and OJ White led the field early with Jared Gilson second and Jock Symonds moving from the tail of the field to third. On lap three Symonds took the lead and was looking to add his name to the list of drivers who had won 10 or more races in one season at Can Am. Once in front Jock Symonds would drive away to score his 10th win of the year, becoming the 25th driver in the history of the speedway, to win 10 or more races in one year. Jared Gilson, OJ White, Collin Bauter and Colby Hibbard completed the top 5.
A special 5 lap Powder Puff event took place featuring the lady drivers. This once-a-year event always is popular with the fans. Maria Gibbons driving the Trevor Gibbons Sportsman car, took the lead early and led the entire distance to take the win.
Next week is another off week for Can Am as staff and Management and the race teams prepare for the next event on August 28th, which is First Responders Night, featuring all first responders from across the region. Fans will be able to get an up close look as many of the trucks and cars our First Responders use to help keep our communities safe.
