A 78-year-old inmate at Joyceville Institution has died while in federal custody.
The Correctional Service of Canada says the inmate, who was being held in the institution’s Assessment Unit, died Wednesday, August 19th, of apparent natural causes.
The individual had been serving a six-year sentence and had been in custody since August 1st, 2024.
The inmate’s name has not been released due to a court-ordered publication ban protecting the identity of the victim or victims involved.
The inmate’s next of kin has been notified.
The Correctional Service of Canada says, as with all deaths involving an inmate, the circumstances surrounding the death will be reviewed.
Police and the coroner have also been notified, as required under CSC policy.
No further details about the individual or the circumstances surrounding the death have been released.
