An annual tradition took place this past Friday night at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York as we honored our First Responders from all over the North Country at the speedway. All took part in the annual parade on the race track which was met with a standing ovation by the crowd on hand. The on track racing also had the crowd buzzing with exciting action all evening with Northern Credit Union on hand as title sponsor for the night.
Hayden Howard had not won in many weeks in the Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman, but was looking to change that as he jumped out from at the start of the 15 lap feature event with Cayden Graham, Rhylan Poole and Jason Rarick close behind. Howard built up a big lead early but the only yellow would fly on lap 6 for Rarick, who slowed and went to the pits for the evening. On the restart Hayden Howard would take the lead but Rhylan Poole stayed close to challenge with Graham still third. Over the final laps Hayden Howard would hold a steady wheel and drive on to his second win of the season. Rhylan Poole held off Cayden Graham for the runner up spot at the checkers.
Will Fisher has been a regular competitor in the Panther Frameworks Crate Sprints at Can Am and was still in search of his first career win. He took the lead at the start of the 15 lap event, but had some company all race long, in the form of Josh VanBrocklin, who was looking for his second win of the year. VanBrocklin put the pressure on Fisher for the top spot for the entire race, but the Chittenango New York driver remained up front and in control. Behind them Adam Turner was on the charge from 10th, as he moved into the top 5 just past the half way point, but had work to do to catch the leaders. Over the final laps Fisher and VanBrocklin continued their spirited battle in traffic as Turner moved in from the number three spot. Try as he may, Josh VanBrocklin did all he could do, but on this night, Will Fisher would go on to score an emotional first career win at Can Am. Josh VanBrocklin, Adam Turner, George Sanford and Rachel Zacharias finished out the top 5 in the caution free race.
Jackson Gill had not won since opening day last year at Can Am and was on a mission to end that drought as he took the lead early in the 25 lap Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTCar 358 Modified feature event. Gill had a fast car and was dominant early, however Billy Dunn and Lance Willix were on the move and would close in to make this night one of he most exciting feature races all year. With the track having plenty of grip, Gill stayed to the bottom, however Dunn decided to make his own lane around the outside portion of the speedway and would get by Willix, who remained right there to challenge. Dunn would slip by for the lead with 10 laps remaining but Gill was not backing down as Dunn slipped off his line slightly, allowing Gill to retake the lead once again. Willix, who lost ground at the time, made up all the time lost and would flex his muscle on lap 18 taking Gill and Dunn three wide into turns three and four, to take over the lead. Dunn tried to get back by, but Willix started to take control with Dunn now second and Gill fading to third. On this night Lance Willix finally put all the struggles behind him scoring his first Can Am win of the season and 5th overall this year. Billy Dunn increased his points lead to 16 over Tim Fuller in the chase for the track title, with a runner up finish. Jackson Gill crossed in third with Preston Forbes finishing a strong 4th and Shaun Shaw 5th.
Two weeks ago, Calcium New York’s Frank Sibley left Can Am Speedway, with a destroyed race car after a terrifying flip on the front stretch in Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTCar Sportsman feature. On this night, Sibley charged by early pace setter Caleb Howard to take the lead away as Owen Nier, Mason Rogers and Jessica Power completed the early top 5 in the 20 lap event. Sibley, with clear race track, in a back up car, was able to run away from the field, building an advantage of nearly 4 seconds by the halfway point, as Owen Nier held on to second with Keegan Nier moving to the top 3. Sibley would enter into lapped traffic but it appeared to be no problem, as he cut through traffic and increased his lead over Owen Nier and the rest of the field. Without help of a caution flag Frank Sibley would march on to a dominant performance, scoring his second win of 2026. Owen Nier claimed another runner up finish, ahead of Keegan Nier, Jessica Power and Tyler Stevenson, who closed to within 10 points of championship leader Gavin Eisele, as the battle for the title heads to final points night next week.
To close out the night the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar division took to the speedway and Kevin Greenfeld took control of the race, over OJ White and Jock Symonds. Greenfield had not been to Can Am in many weeks, but looked fast early in the race, but points leader and 10 time winner Jock Symonds, moved to the runner up spot and chased down Greenfield. On lap 5 Greenfield’s car had problems allowing Symonds to take over the lead, as Greenfield headed to pit road and was out for the night. From there Jock Symonds would put his car on auto pilot and drive away from the field once again, to secure his 11th win of the season in 13 starts and lock up the 2026 Sundance Leisure Thundercar championship with one race remaining. OJ White came across in second with Colby Hibbard, Jared Gilson and Collin Bauter the top 5.
Next week point titles will be up for grabs in all divisions, as the 52nd season starts to draw to a close. With tight point battles and drivers still searching for their first wins of the year, the evening promises to be an action packed one as always. Racing begins at 7pm next Friday night.
