Local MP Michael Barrett says Canada must continue to stand strong against U.S. President Donald Trump as retaliatory tariffs on American products take effect.
The tariffs, covering products including steel, aluminum, automobiles and consumer goods, came into effect Tuesday.
Barrett says retaliatory tariffs are necessary at this point in time.
He says the effects will definitely be felt in Leeds and Grenville, particularly because of the riding’s reliance on manufacturing.
Barrett says he is content with how the federal government is dealing with the Trump administration, but wants more transparency.
He has suggested Parliament be recalled so the trade committee can collect details and work together.
Barrett says Canada must stand strong and make sure it gets a good deal.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has urged Canadians to support and buy Canadian products as the trade war continues.
Barrett says supporting neighbours, friends and family is also key as economic uncertainty continues.
