The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Say the suspect of a shooting near a synagogue in Belleville has died.
On Monday, police identified 29-year-old Sean Ward Quinte West man as their suspect. As of Tuesday afternoon, news broke that he had died.
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. Sunday near the Sons of Jacob Synagogue during Yom Kippur, one of the holiest days in the Jewish faith. The SIU is investigating.
SIU Spokesperson Kristy Denette says the officer stationed near the synagogue returned fire after the suspect arrived in a truck armed with a shotgun. A second officer also fired.
Const. Jeff Smith, a nearly 13-year veteran of the Belleville Police Service, was seriously injured.
Police Deputy Chief Sherry Meeks said Smith is recovering.
Police say there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
Belleville Police have increased patrols and are maintaining a height police presence throughout the city, including around places of worship, while continuing to work closely with community leaders to provide reassurance and support.
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support Const. Jeff Smith and his family following the Sept. 20 shooting outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue. The fundraiser was organized by members of the Jewish community in Toronto and has received support from donors across Canada.
Organizers say they are working with Belleville Police Service and Smith’s family to determine how the money will be distributed. The fundraiser will remain open indefinitely while Smith continues his recovery.
