Gananoque Police are warning residents to be on alert for an ongoing scam involving fraudsters posing as bank investigators or financial institution security staff.
The warning comes after Kingston Police reported receiving multiple complaints about the “fake bank investigator” scam, and Gananoque Police say residents in the Town should be aware they could also be targeted.
Scammers typically claim suspicious activity has been detected on a victim’s bank account and then ask for personal information, online banking credentials or verification codes.
Police say victims have also been convinced to hand over bank cards, purchase gift cards or gold, withdraw and mail cash, send e-transfers or deposit money into cryptocurrency ATMs.
Residents are reminded that legitimate financial institutions will never ask for passwords or verification codes, bank cards, gift cards, cash or cryptocurrency as part of an investigation.
Anyone receiving a suspicious call should hang up and contact their bank directly using a trusted phone number.
