The Gananoque Fire Department is looking to help local seniors stay safe in their homes through a proposed Senior Fire Safety Check-In Program.
The initiative would offer registered participants a home visit every six months to check basic fire and carbon monoxide safety measures.
Fire officials say crews sometimes find homes with missing, expired or non-functioning alarms. They recognize that routine safety tasks can become difficult for seniors due to mobility challenges, aging or the loss of a spouse.
During visits, firefighters would check smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, identify potential concerns and discuss home fire safety.
The department would contact registered participants every six months to arrange appointments, removing the need for seniors to remember to request another visit.
Residents can help spread the word to older family members, neighbours and friends.
For information or to inquire about a visit, contact Deputy Chief Andrew Kent at akent@gananoque.ca or 613-382-3334, extension 2303.
