The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario is adding classroom teachers and early childhood educators after elementary enrolment exceeded spring estimates, while also stepping up efforts to improve student achievement in math and literacy.
The board added just over 14 classroom teachers and five early childhood educators for the 2026-27 school year, following an increase of 162 elementary students beyond initial projections.
The board confirmed it meets all applicable elementary class-size requirements. Secondary compliance will be assessed using enrolment figures from Oct. 31.
At its Oct. 20 meeting, trustees also received updates on plans to strengthen classroom instruction and provide targeted support for students who need extra help.
The board is expanding math resources, small-group interventions and professional development for educators, with particular attention to Grade 9 mathematics.
Meanwhile, the board reported that 2025-26 EQAO results maintained or improved performance in every area for a third consecutive year.
The meeting also marked the departure of board chair Chris Cummings after four years of service.
