The Gananoque Senior Islanders have announced they will discontinue operations and withdraw from the Northern Premier Hockey League (formerly the Eastern Ontario Super Hockey League).
In a statement from owner Jeff McEwen and general manager/coach Tom Dickson, the team reflected on four memorable seasons in Gananoque, highlighted by their 2023–24 championship victory. The organization expressed deep gratitude to its sponsors, players, player families, staff, volunteers, and the wider Gananoque community for their support.
McEwen and Dickson praised the dedication of players who gave their time, energy, and heart to represent the Islanders, often making personal sacrifices. They acknowledged the families and staff whose contributions shaped the team’s success, and the volunteers who made every home game a memorable experience.
The team also recognized the support of local hockey organizations, including the Royals and Gananoque Minor Hockey Association.
The closure marks a bittersweet milestone: for the first time since 1972, Gananoque will be without a higher-level hockey team. While the Islanders will no longer take the ice, the organization says the pride, camaraderie, and spirit of the team will endure in the community.
