Rabies is a deadly but preventable disease, and pet owners across Leeds, Grenville and Lanark counties will soon have the opportunity to protect their cats and dogs at a low cost. The South East Health Unit (SEHU), working with veterinarians, municipalities, and community partners, is hosting rabies vaccination clinics on Wednesday, September 17, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The clinics will be held at several convenient locations, including Brockville, Elgin, Kemptville, Merrickville, Prescott, Westport, Carleton Place, Perth, and Smiths Falls. Vaccinations cost $25 cash only, and all pets must arrive on a leash or in a secure carrier.
The goal of the program is to ensure as many pets as possible remain up to date with their rabies shots, reducing the risk of transmission between animals and humans. Hunters are also reminded to vaccinate their dogs before the upcoming season, as wildlife encounters can increase risk.
In addition, residents are urged to avoid contact with unknown or wild animals, and to seek immediate medical attention if bitten or scratched. By increasing vaccination coverage, SEHU hopes to strengthen community-wide protection against rabies.
