The Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands is reminding residents of the importance of recycling to protect the environment, conserve natural resources, and reduce landfill waste. Everyday items such as paper, plastics, glass, and metals can be recycled locally, helping create a cleaner, more sustainable community. Local landfills accept a wide range of recyclable materials, including appliances, batteries, boat wrap, yard waste, cardboard, electronics, glass containers, lumber, metals, organic waste in green bins, plastics, paper, scrap metal, Styrofoam, and tires.
However, some items should not be placed in recycling and must be disposed of with regular garbage. These include books, cloth, gift wrap, facial tissue, plastic toys without recycling labels, and certain plastic wraps. Additionally, some materials are strictly prohibited in local landfills, such as asbestos, concrete, hazardous waste, agricultural bale wrap, and large stumps or brush over 7.5 cm.
Residents are encouraged to follow the township’s recycling guidelines to ensure materials are properly sorted and processed. For a complete list of accepted and prohibited items, visit the Township of Leeds and the Thousand Islands website. Recycling responsibly helps safeguard the environment for future generations.
