Something to be aware of if visiting Kingston to do your holiday shopping. Kingston Police are warning residents about a new scam involving fake Uber and taxi drivers in the region.
Scammers use vehicles that look like real taxis, sometimes with stolen or fake taxi lights and Ontario license plates. They often work in pairs, with one acting as the driver and the other as a passenger.
The fake passenger approaches victims, claiming the taxi won’t accept cash for a small fare. Victims are asked to pay using their own bank card. The card is inserted into a modified terminal that captures the PIN. The passenger then gives cash back while swapping the victim’s card with a fake or already compromised card. Scammers use the stolen cards to withdraw money at ATMs and stores.
Anyone targeted or affected is asked to file a police report online or by calling 613-549-4660. Police also encourage anyone with information to contact D/Cst. Stefan Walker.
