A significant cache of contraband with an estimated institutional value of $132,030 has been seized at Joyceville Institution.
The seizure took place Feb. 14 after staff at the multi-level security federal facility intercepted a package containing tobacco, marijuana, cannabis concentrate known as “shatter,” and MDMA. Officials say the discovery was the result of staff vigilance.
The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) employs a range of measures to prevent drugs and other unauthorized items from entering its institutions. These include ion scanners and detector dogs used to search buildings, inmates, visitors and personal property.
CSC said it continues to strengthen efforts to keep contraband out of federal facilities to maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, inmates and visitors. The agency also works with police to investigate attempts to introduce contraband and operates a telephone tip line to gather information related to institutional security.
