A resident of Leeds County has lost more than $100,000 in a cryptocurrency investment fraud, authorities confirmed. The incident was reported to the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on Saturday, March 21, 2026, shortly after 6:00 p.m., and an investigation is currently ongoing.
Cryptocurrency investment fraud typically involves victims being persuaded to invest in fake opportunities through social media, dating apps, or online advertisements promising quick returns. Scammers may guide victims to download trading apps or create cryptocurrency wallets, ultimately making it impossible to access the funds once transferred. According to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, Canadians lost over $351 million to cryptocurrency scams in 2025.
Police advise residents to watch for high-return investment promises, unsolicited offers via social media or email, and requests to transfer crypto to alternate accounts. Authorities warn that government agencies, banks, or police will never ask for payment in cryptocurrency. Anyone suspecting fraud should contact local police, the CAFC at 1‑888‑495‑8501, and their credit bureaus.
