As Ontario’s seatbelt law enters its 51st year, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are reminding drivers and passengers of the life-saving importance of buckling up. Despite decades of safety awareness, nearly one in four road fatalities investigated by the OPP still involves individuals who were not wearing a seatbelt.
The OPP emphasizes that these deaths are made even more tragic because they are often preventable. Choosing not to wear a seatbelt can have devastating consequences for families, a reality the police hope to prevent through ongoing education and enforcement.
Over the Easter long weekend, OPP officers are conducting a province-wide seatbelt campaign, encouraging everyone on Ontario roads to buckle up. Special attention is being paid to child safety, with reminders to ensure that children are secured in the correct car seat, booster, or seatbelt for their age, weight, and height.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to reinforce seatbelt use as a lifelong habit, helping to make Ontario roads safer for all.
