After more than 20 seasons behind the bench, Queen’s Gaels men’s hockey head coach Brett Gibson is calling it a career.
Gibson announced his retirement from the program on Monday. The decision comes weeks after the team lost to the University of New Brunswick in the quarterfinal game at the USPORTS national championship in Halifax.
Gibson says that it was time for him to move on.
Gibson has coached 512 games compiling a record of 281-183-48. He also accumulated 32 wins in the post-season.
Gibson says one of the things he will miss is the bond he had with the players.
Gibson began his coaching career with the Kingston Frontenacs of the OHL as an assistant. After one season, he found himself out of a job before a former Maple Leaf and Canadien player gave him a call.
Among Gibson’s accomplishments: 2018-2019 Queen’s Cup Champions, a two-time OUA East Division Coach of the Year (2007-2008, 2013-2014), and U SPORTS Men’s Hockey Coach of the Year (2013-14). He leaves as the winningest coach in the history of the Queen’s Gaels men’s hockey program.
