A 41-year-old Ottawa man is dead following a boating incident on the St. Lawrence River north of Grenadier Island.
Ontario Provincial Police say officers from the Leeds County Detachment were called shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday after reports a 15-foot aluminum boat carrying multiple people had capsized. One occupant was reported missing.
Leeds 1000 Islands Fire Service crews located one person unresponsive in the water. The victim was taken by ambulance to hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police have not released the circumstances that led to the boat overturning, and the investigation remains ongoing. The OPP Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement Team is assisting.
Grenadier Island is located in the Thousand Islands region near the Canada-U.S. border and is a popular area for recreational boating. Police are asking anyone who may have information related to the incident to contact Leeds County OPP.
The death marks another reminder for boaters to use caution early in the season, when cold water and changing conditions can increase risk on area waterways.
