Police officers in the Town of Gananoque are there to help and assisting in a mental health crisis can be a challenge. Gananoque Police Chief Rich Swann spoke with us about the challenges that he and his team face when someone is facing a challenging time.
Chief Swann says a program which has been a major benefit is having a civilian staff member from our local health unit on site, to help deal with people who may be struggling.
Swann says being a law enforcement officer can have its share of mental health struggles and is always reminding his team to look after themselves. He says the same thing goes for the people they deal with on a daily basis, reminding them that his team is there to help and keep everyone safe.
