Emergency alert test set to hit Canadians during preparedness week in May
Canadians will see and hear a test of the Alert Ready system on Thursday (May 7) at 12:55 p.m. during Emergency Preparedness Week running May 3 to 9. The test message will be broadcast on television, radio and compatible wireless devices across most provinces and territories.
The alert will simulate an emergency and begin with the Canadian Alert Attention Signal. Officials say it will clearly state it is only a test and no action is required.
The annual test is designed to increase public awareness, encourage preparedness conversations, and ensure the system works properly across broadcasters and wireless providers. It also gives emergency agencies practice issuing real alerts if needed.
Not all mobile users will receive the message due to device compatibility, network coverage, or settings issues.
The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission requires at least one test each year. Alerts cannot be opted out of.
